Redwood's article embodies the attitudes of someone caught up in the hurly-burly of day-to-day politics, where the imperative that government "do something" is simply taken for granted. Someone should work out a principled classical liberal approach to the extraordinary case he describes, an approach that we would be happy to apply in other cases where a private firm gets into difficulties.

I'm appalled that the IEA has turned commie.

Consider this: "arguably paying the owners £1 for the whole thing would be very generous.."

Communism is an ideology that has killed millions and made hungry millions more in the 20th century, you may have read about it in the news.

We want market discovery of what a fair price should be, not the IEA concluding that zero should be the effective price at which the UK confiscates assets from foreigners. And we'd be doing those foreigners a favour if we did.

No to that.

I'll not be renewing if I'm awake when the invitation comes round again.

Thank you for this very informative article. I hadn't seen anything in mainstream media coverage, but to be fair, I regard this as the new norm so spend less time looking, which makes this post all the more valuable.
