Indeed! Thank you, Matt, and had the late great James Lovelock still been alive with his Gaia principle who in his book Novacene, written aged 99, said exactly that too! I know full well, it was this invention which transformed the life chances of all on this planet of ours and you only have to look to China who after the bloodletting of the The Great Leap Forward with the death of 60million, and the coming of Deng who said in 1981 'Our people have suffered enough, we are going to adopt your system of Capitalism with a Socialist core' and in just 40 years lifted 900,000million of their people out of poverty using the original coal for energy technology. Yes there are consequences not least damaging our planet but we need to turn our attention to hydrogen because we have that in abundance. Necessity is the mother of invention - our minds should be bent on finding clean safe energy with hydrogen not windfarms.
James Watt woukd never invest south of Birmingham, but North.
If you add £100bn to London, you get far less %age benefit than poorer north of Birmingham.
In 2017 were the Parliamentarians given an option?- £100bn north or £100bn south of Birmingham - in a high speed rail line (in 2017 there was Nothing in the Bill to say how much it was going to cost either, so I use a totally arbitrary number of £100bn to ilustrate what I mean).
The 2017 HS2 Act Said NOTHING of north of Birmnham - the vote was "do you support the Govt or not". What a WASTE of MONEY, adding £100bn to a very rich economy, when North investment would have been so much Bigger a proportion of their poorer economy...... with better return in GDP and Exports!!
The whole concept of a "BETTER " rail line between london and edinburgh was the economic benefit presumed in 2008 but nobody in Govt thought to Now ask "where should we start? what precisely should we do" AND what do the Engineers think they can do to find cost effective solution to this Economic need and FINANCIAL benefit? Before you launch, what do the Engineers think would be the lower FINANCIAL cost (effective) solution to IMPROVE the benefit - at least ASK THEM!! But NO they did NOT...... just launched OFF THE CLIFF! To £100bn LOSS.
2,000mph south of Birmigham, or 180mph north of Birmingham. Govt never asked and went stupid - Very High speed (don't look at the North properly!!), QUITE DAFT for the rail lines have to be as straight as possible (hence I say 2,000mph to exagerate the craziness) mean very expensive tunnels in the south (30% of the route today is IN DARKNESS - so they could do 300mph or more?.....) !!
I will NOT travel it, for I like the countryside FAR FAR more thankyou, and the house lights twinkling at night is great fun too, and 90mph average on the current route every hour is fine by me.....in a total journey time of probably 2.5 hours anyway for none of us STOP at the Terminus do we?, there is always some extra km to go to complete our overall trip!
Options in ANY Proposal are ESSENTIAL. Helps the Customer ask questions by comparing, and thus helps the Customer understand the REAL World and Prioritise. Nothing like this actual happened, just plain (use your word!) INCOMPETENCE.....
Where did Govt go SO VERY WRONG? Money men leading with mechanics digging, no Design Engineers in sight. Your view?

Thankyou Matt, good overview I think.
