From the 1950s to the early 2000s, the UK grew fast enough to double its prosperity roughly every 30 years. Over the past two decades, the motor of British growth has dramatically slowed. An 18-year-old today lives in a country barely richer than the one they were born into.
In a new book from the Institute of Economic Affairs, The Great Stagnation: Why Britain Stopped Growing, contributors from the UK and abroad set out how the British economy came to stagnate and what it would take to avoid a third lost decade.
