Our author demonstrates with ease that rent caps and other such forms of market interference end up having negative outcomes for the people they were supposed to help. Fine, and so far so obvious. But: it isn't as if the left-wing administrations who introduce these policies don't know what the result will be. Of course they do; they're not that stupid, but the fact is they don't care. They introduce their policies because the will play well with their voter base. That's it. Bad outcomes are irrelevant. You only have to look at the Socialist Would-Be Republic of Scotland. Policy after policy is introduced, free schoolbags being but the latest in an ever-expanding list, which squander taxpayers' money - that is the English taxpayer and the suckers left in the SWBRS who pay tax - yet delight the non-tax paying supporter base of the SNP. Relentless interference in the rental market, a market they cannot leave alone for five minutes, has forced huge and increasing numbers of landlords to sell up. The resultant shortage has driven up rental prices, creating further, delicious opportunity for the SNP to interfere again and make the situation still worse. But they don't CARE. The left never care if their policies don't work or make things worse. All that matters is the 'optics' (brownie points for using the word?) as presented to their client base. Which is why the only way they can be stopped is when 'other people's money' runs out.
