Watch now | In this Institute of Economic Affairs podcast, IEA Director of Communications Callum Price is joined by Director General Lord Hannan and Head of Lifestyle Economics Dr Christopher Snowdon to discuss the first days of Andy Burnham’s premiership, Britain’s welfare crisis, and the reshuffle at the Department of Energy and Net Zero.
Best of luck Callum! You have been a great success. I wish you well in your on line future!
I liked this talk. I agree with the debunking of net zero. It’s a waste of time and money. Green agendas cost money. Until we have growth and a surplus we can’t even start investing in them.
Yes we can always consider them in our decisions. But to legislate is a big mistake. And a red herring.
As too is GROWTH!
Your correct. Growth is a word. Used in placebos a real answer. It’s meaningless either way explanation.
But your narrow accountancy view of cuts and a small state is excruciatingly depressing.
Can’t you get it? Can’t you see beyond the 2+2=4? that disability benefits, pensions unemployment benefits and the rest is not a cost but it’s a movement of money from the top back to the bottom who SPEND it all each month giving that resupply of flow to give incomes to the top again?
Surely you can’t be that short sighted? Surely you have to see the full picture of money flow? But I guess you are that blinkered. Otherwise you would see what I see. So my advice to you is start thinking, thinking it through not from one cost to cut but see how money can flow better and stop reacting as if you’re always right. You may be wrong! I think you are.
I’m sorry to be blunt. But I’ve been a member for a year nearly and I’ve had very few reply’s from anyone there at the IEA.
Look, whether you like it or not cuts make the situation worse. It prevents flow. It stops the wheels turning. It doesn’t make things better. Yes it reduces costs! But unless you’re going to make more money flow to replace your cuts it’s a waste of time.
The cost is the cost! You can’t buck the market. But what governments can do is regulate money.
I have a small sympathy with MMT. It confirms money is produced. But that all I agree with.
Money can be produced. It has always been that way. But our engineering mechanics and instruments have evolved into a mess. One that costs too much.
With all due respect to you all do we need you instead of doctors or nurses? Do we need pen pushing bankers in front carpenters builders and electricians? There is more waste out in the economy than in the disabled quarter!
And whilst your concentrated on government spending your ignoring ALL other SPENDING.
It matters not how much oil we have or gas or Cambridgeshire Silicon Valley brilliance. If people out there don’t have money to SPEND it’s never going to run.
Unless you look at the flow of money and the amount of flow via SPENDING then you can’t ever get that answer to GROWTH.
You should sway up on how taxes work!
The tax take of government is solely based on SPENDING. You truly have to grasp this or you’ll continue to be blinded by your own delusions.
Income tax and Nic maybe based on wages incomes and earnings. But they are actually TRIGGERED by the employer SPENDING on the employee. Without their business getting money from punters like the disabled if the pensioner or the unemployed and let’s face it the unemployable SPENDING their incomes in full each month then, those businesses who pay for income taxes and Nic won’t get that money to afford those taxes! The flow needs money arm from the top and given to the bottom. Are you that blind you can’t see the need for money? You have to follow the money!!!!!!
Don’t look at government costs in isolation!
You are guilty of just that in my opinion.
Private sector relies on the money spent each month in full by the public sector.
What is missing in your thoughts and calculations is how can the private sector increase flow to give the tax take increase our government needs to get a surplus! Not cut SPENDING! That’s idiotic in my opinion.
Any idiot can say cut spending. It takes brains to know how to make more from less! And because it takes thought is why we are devoid of answers.
That’s not right it left! It’s just common sense!!
Money held unspent each month at the top doesn’t even attract taxation! In fact money unspent in a month received as income that remains unspent isn’t made to move from making it be SPENT either.
So money at the top isn’t taxed and it doesent contribute to the flow we need to trigger taxes.
Thats where you need to concentrate your opinions. Not at the unemployable. The sick or the oppressed. You’re not oppressed! You font spend all your money you don’t contribute 100% of your incomes to survival. They do!!
As you get paid, cant you see that, that money you need that you get probably comes from those pensioners and disabled and infirm and unemployable spending in the businesses you get your money from. You’d be shooting yourselves in the foot!
You may get paid via donations direct from those. If you may get donations from bigger business. But I can assure you that the money they get comes in one way or do from those people’s spending every month in full.
People who don’t spend in full don’t contribute totally by the amount they don’t spend. The rich who don’t spend any income pay no tax and contribute nothing. Those who lend that money back don’t pay tax don’t contribute and get snd take more money exponentially from out economy.
Do can’t you see? Money has to revolve more in more weight of amount and in a faster time than now to get that elusive growth.
That’s the type of linked up thinking we need. Not your short sighted views.
Mire spending big the money that hadn’t been spent. That’s what growth is. More of our money making a difference instead of a debt.
